Frequently asked questions

Everything about the microbial solution

The solution contains five different bacterial strains, which are in a vegetative but rapidly activated form. These bacteria have been specially developed to tolerate industrial detergents, high temperatures, variable pH and other challenging conditions in wastewater systems. The bacteria feed on organic waste, cellulose, fat, starch, protein, and a fifth strain that thrives in anaerobic conditions feeds on hydrogen sulphide. These substances are converted by bacterial metabolism into water, carbon dioxide and bacterial biomass.

The bacterial strains in the microbial solution literally eat away at the organic waste in the sewer pipes. They then form a biofilm on the inside surface of the pipe, which prevents new organic matter from sticking to the sewer pipes. Once the organic waste is removed from the sewer pipes, no blockages or the highly corrosive and foul-smelling hydrogen sulphide can form. When the formation of hydrogen sulphide, which corrodes the sewer pipes, stops, the lifespan of the pipe system is extended.

The microbial solution is already in a vegetative state, so it starts to multiply and eat organic waste as soon as it enters the sewer system. However, the biological purification process is not immediate, and results are only achieved within the first few weeks. The microbial solution is not recommended for acute pipe blockages but for their prevention.

The effectiveness of the microbial solution is based on continuous use. When the microbial solution is regularly dosed, the bacterial populations remain alive and are able to remove organic waste all the time. If use is discontinued, new organic waste will start to accumulate in the sewer pipes over time. This leads back to the initial situation where the accumulated waste forms blockages and, as it rots, produces foul-smelling hydrogen sulphide that corrodes the pipes.

The microbial solution is non-corrosive and not harmful to humans or animals. However, the preservative 1,2-benzisothiazoline-3-one or the surface tension-relieving alcohol C7-C21 contained in the microsolution may cause an allergic reaction. Our solution is completely environmentally friendly.

Organic waste problems have traditionally been solved with strong chemicals such as acid, lye or enzyme-based substances, which of course work quickly to dissolve blockages. However, these substances are harmful to both the user’s health and the environment. They also do not eliminate the problem, but simply pass it on. The goal that led to the creation of ProtectPipe was to find a safe, environmentally friendly, effective and, above all, definitive solution for the removal of organic waste.

Organic waste in sewers is a breeding ground for banana flies and sugar gnats. When the bacterial colonies in the microbial solution remove the organic waste accumulated in the sewer pipes, the insects also lose their breeding ground and can no longer reproduce. This means that banana flies and other insects are eliminated for good. However, if the banana fly problem is caused, for example, by rotting bio-roses or fruit, the microbial solution will not be effective.

Organic waste is constantly entering the pipes, for example from washing clothes, doing the dishes, showering and using the toilet. In other words, there is always organic matter in the pipes. If there is no more food in the pipes, our microbes simply stop working.

All our products have their own instructions for use and dosage, which we always send to the customer with the order. Most solutions have automatic dosage which is calculated and calibrated by our professionals.

The functionality of a microbial solution is based on a biological process that takes time. We therefore do not recommend using the substance to open blockages, but as a preventive treatment to prevent blockages from forming. If you have an acute blockage, we recommend that you crack the blockage open, after which you can start preventive treatment. This will ensure that no further blockages develop.

Yes. The product can be used with confidence on all sewer pipes, regardless of age and condition. The product has a safety rating of H1, which means that it does not contain any warning signs. For this reason, it also does not embrittle pipes at all. Our product is designed to protect pipes and extend their life by many years.

Environmental impact

ProtectPipe’s microbial solutions are completely environmentally friendly. The bacteria in our microbial solutions are grown on farms across Europe and are mixed and packaged in Finland. Our products are completely organic, chemical-free and have a safety rating of H1, meaning they don’t need any warning labels. Microbes do not cause any problems to the environment at any stage of their life cycle. Our products replace traditional sewer opening products, which often include harmful chemicals.

The use of our microbial solutions reduces nutrient pollution in the Baltic Sea. The bacteria in the solution eat organic waste from the wastewater, cleaning it at all stages from the sewer pipe to the water treatment plant. The water treatment plant operates more efficiently, reducing the risk of contaminated water entering water bodies. Ships with more efficient water treatment will discharge increasingly cleaner water into the straits and the sea. By making environmental performance economically viable, we are encouraging more and more companies to act responsibly and sustainably.
